In 1967 a Chair of Art History and Theory was formed in the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, which was led by Professor Levan Rcheulishvili for several years. From its foundation, the Faculty closely collaborated with the Giorgi Chubinashvili Institute of Georgian Art History, leading centre specialising in the study of Georgian art, whose prominent researchers (Vakhtang Beridze, Gaiane Alibegashvili, Natela Aladashvili, Meri Karbelashvili, Kitty Machabeli, Nodar Jamberidze, Leila Khuskivadze, Iuza Khuskivadze, etc) have taught at the Academy for many years. In their turn, the graduates of the Faculty of Art History and Theory have joined the Academy’s teaching staff and are leading experts of the field. The longstanding cooperation between the Direction of Art History and Theory and the Giorgi Chubinashvili Institute of Georgian Art History has laid a foundation for the development of this field. The tradition of close collaboration has been further enhanced under the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and the Institute (presently the Giorgi Chubinashvili National Research Centre for History of Georgian Art and Monument Protection).
The Faculty prepares researchers of Georgian art, many of whom have received recognition in international scholarly circles.
