Giorgi Gugushvili graduated the Nikoladze Art College (Major in Painting/Art Education) in 1971 and Tbilisi Academy of Art in 1977 (Major in Painting)

Upon graduation, at different times, he served as Head of the Department of Fine Arts at the Tbilisi Artists’ House, Chair of the Board of the Artists’ Union of Georgia and Director of the ‘Georgian Stamp’ at the Georgian Post.
During 2004-2006 he was Vice Rector of the Tbilisi State Academy of Art, and from 2006 to 2009 was a full professor of the Academy and the Dean of the Faculty of the Fine Arts.

In 2013 he was re-elected as full professor of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Academy.


Gia Gugushvili has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Georgia and abroad. He is a laureate of the state prize (1994) and a winner of international symposia of Bulgaria (1986), Osaka (1987) and of  Art Symposium (2007). In 1984 he was recognized as the best artist in the union-wide exhibition held in Moscow 1984.
In 2014 Gugushvili was awarded a prize by the organization Georgian Soul for the contribution made to Georgian culture.


His works are kept in the Georgian National Museum (GNM), Atchara Museum of Art (Batumi), Oriental Museum (Moscow), Christoph Merian Stiftung (Basel), Norton Dodge Collection (Philadelphia), as well as private galleries and collections in Georgia and abroad.
